Credit cards versus cash

We suggest that visitors to Myanmar read this section carefully in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

CREDIT CARDS

Following the lifting of some international sanctions, some hotels and restaurants have started to accept credit cards since February 2013. You now have the possibility to withdraw cash ( Myanmar Kyats MMK ) from ATM through some credit cards.

Visa or Master card allow you to withdraw local currency only ( Myanmar Kyats, MMK ) so you will still need to bring sufficient USD or Euro to pay for major expenses .

ATM machines are widely installed in Yangon ( at Shwedagon Pagoda , Cinema and near Super market or at some hotels, at banks and airports ) , Mandalay, Bagan and Inle area.

Customers with any Visa cards bearing Visa logo and Plus Sign can withdraw cash at ATMs. Maximum amount per withdrawl is MMK 300,000 and daily maximum amount of withdrawl is MMK 1,000,000 subject to the limit set up by the issuing bank. ATMs charge a small fee of MMK 5000 or equivalent for each transaction.

Some visa cards are restricted by the issuing bank to use the card oversea and therefore, customers may require seeking the approval of the issuing bank in order to do so.

Travellers cheques

Travellers cheques are not accepted in Myanmar.

Carefully calculate how much cash you will need to bring with you before departing your country. Once you are in Myanmar, you will not be able to make up for any shortfall that might occur during the course of your visit.
